Eric had one gut punch after another in this episode. His whole world has been turned upside down (in a completely different way than Bill’s). This season is a mess for him: he’s struggling to find wholeness in himself, he’s lost love, he’s been betrayed, been tortured, he’s surrounded by dangerous lunatics, and is the one sane one in the room. Poor Eric is so mild in the circumstances, but I found myself saying it every time he was on screen. Poor Eric.

Eric isn’t about big explosions or showy reactions. He is percolating. And it’s going to come to fruition. Tides are changing. :)

Eric is a survivalist and a pacifist when push comes to shove. He sees danger for Bill in the path Bill’s going down, and after all the effort he put into keeping him alive, is very shocked, disappointed, betrayed (though I don’t doubt that he had little to no real faith in him in the first place…), etc..

The bold. I don’t think he is terribly heartbroken about Bill. Because what little faith he had in him, it couldn’t have been much. Like you said, Eric is a survivor, and that means the last thing he is is stupid. And it would be a stupid thing to put so much faith in Bill that it actually comes as a real shock. Bill has betrayed him before. This cannot be a total “OH MY GOD!” moment.

What I think surprises Eric is that Bill has completely changed his outward tune. Thus far, Bill, for all his true nature, was very careful to show a specific face to the world at large. This complete turn-about is less shocking and more inconvenient. And disappointing, too, because Eric was hoping to have at least one other person here who wants to get the fuck out. And now he is realizing he is alone.

Exactly - it’s not necessarily a sudden realization of who Bill is - but that he is truly on his own here. Two episodes in a row, the last image is of just that: Eric alone. The only one in the room seeing the truth and not deluded by religious fervor, power, bloodlust, or whatever else is motivating the others.
